Recent Trends in Data on Long-Term Conditions: Focus on National Surveillance of Cancer Incidence. 2000–2010. November 2012

This study, updated annually, presents national trends in the rate of long-term illness (ALD) designations issued by the three main health insurance funds from 2000 to 2010 for 22 cancer sites. Its objective is to identify recent breaks in trends. Four cancer sites showing a recent break in trends were identified. For breast cancer, the ALD rate has stabilized since 2004, and 2010 suggests a slight resumption of the upward trend. The ALD rate for prostate cancer stabilized between 2004 and 2007 following years of strong growth, and a decline was then observed starting in 2008. The ALD rate for thyroid cancer has shown a slowdown in growth since 2004. The ALD rate for cervical cancer decreased through 2006 and then stabilized. This study is based on graphical comparisons, and only major trends can be interpreted. Furthermore, caution is warranted in interpretation, as these trends may be influenced by changes in regulations or ALD admission practices. The trends observed for breast and prostate cancer are consistent with epidemiological knowledge. The incidence of thyroid cancer is highly sensitive to medical practices, and short- and medium-term trends in the incidence of this cancer remain uncertain. Regarding cervical cancer, a stabilization in incidence has been observed in recent years in several countries but, to our knowledge, without explanation. In France, this stabilization is not observed in the most recent registry data. It will be particularly interesting to monitor trends in the incidence of this cancer over the coming years using registry data. (R.A.)
