Monitoring the quality of life of patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease. Quality of Life Report – REIN. Dialysis Component 2005

A quality-of-life study was conducted among a representative sample of 832 patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis, using the SF-36 and KDQoL complex measurement instruments. The study demonstrated that their quality of life is significantly impaired, particularly in terms of physical well-being and the burden of the disease. The pain dimension is significantly impaired and is undoubtedly an underestimated aspect of the impact of kidney disease on daily life. More than three out of four patients have at least one quality-of-life score below the reference values for the general population (a deviation from the mean of more than two standard deviations). In addition to the usual sociodemographic factors (gender, age, socioeconomic status, etc.), quality of life was influenced by the presence of comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular ones, nutritional status as estimated by serum albumin levels, and the type of dialysis (higher quality of life among patients on peritoneal dialysis). Taking all these factors into account, significant regional disparities persist. Action plans for improving quality of life, which could be implemented as part of the "Quality of Life and Chronic Diseases" plan, are proposed. (R.A.)
