Effective Interventions to Prevent Loss of Independence Among Older Adults Living at Home: A Review of the Literature—Key Findings.
This document is a summary of the scientific literature review on effective interventions for preventing the loss of independence among older adults living at home, produced by INPES. The purpose of this summary is to provide public health officials and frontline professionals with an overview of interventions whose effectiveness has been validated through scientific protocols. To ensure effectiveness and rigor, this review was conducted using a method developed at INPES in 2010 to better analyze the scientific literature and identify and classify relevant interventions. Approximately twenty interventions are highlighted here as having an impact on healthy aging. The most effective interventions focus on fall prevention, followed by mental health promotion. Half of the methods are one-dimensional: most often based on physical activity; or dietary supplements, education, counseling... Others are two-dimensional, incorporating home visits and information... Still others are multidimensional, combining several of these approaches with the ability to assess risks at home, use a media campaign, or conduct a comprehensive health assessment... Knowledge of these intervention approaches used internationally should enrich the discussion on practices developed in France.
