Description and Incidence of Sports Injuries. Continuous Survey on Accidents in Daily Life, 2004–2005. EPAC Network

Sports-related accidents are a subset of accidents of daily life (ADL). On their own, they account for nearly 20% of ADLs requiring emergency department visits, or approximately 900,000 each year. Understanding their numbers, the circumstances under which they occur, and the associated risk factors forms the basis for prevention efforts. This report presents the first detailed descriptive findings on accidents by sport and by occurrence characteristics, based on data collected as part of the Continuous Survey on Accidents of Daily Life (Epac) in 2004 and 2005. Epac relies on the recording of emergency department visits for ADLs at selected hospitals in France. Data are collected comprehensively by trained data collectors. Quality analyses are conducted at least once a year in each participating hospital to ensure the quality, completeness, and reliability of the data collection. Based on these data, the incidence rate (IR) of sports injuries was estimated at 15.1 per 1,000 people, 22.0 per 1,000 men, and 8.6 per 1,000 women. In absolute terms, these IRs correspond to 910,000 sports injuries each year in France, 640,000 among men and 270,000 among women. Sports-related accidents therefore primarily affected men (sex ratio 2.3). The most common sports at the time of the accident were team sports (particularly soccer), horseback riding, and winter sports. The characteristics of those injured and the consequences of the accidents vary by sport. These results provide an initial overview of accidental injuries occurring during sports activities. The nine emergency departments participating in EPAC represent a small portion of emergency departments in France, and the heterogeneity of hospital care limits the generalizability of these results. Further studies are needed to document factors not available in EPAC: supervision, severity of injuries, occurrence of sequelae, and frequency of occurrence by sport, level, and number of licensed participants.
