Accidents in Daily Life in France According to the 2002 Health and Social Protection Survey
This report presents descriptive epidemiological data on accidents in daily life (ADL) as reported in the 2002 Health and Social Protection Survey. The breakdown of ACDs by age, sex, type of accident, and type of injury yielded results similar to those reported in France or abroad by surveys such as the Continuous Survey on Accidents of Daily Life. Nearly 40% of accident victims sought hospital care; 37% of accident victims sought emergency care; 11% were hospitalized. The survey showed that the occurrence of a daily life accident among people with a higher education level was twice as frequent as among those with a primary education level, and that accidents were 1.5 times more frequent in single-person households than in others. It also examined limitations in daily activities following the accident, as reported by the accident victims. These limitations are influenced by certain factors: age, type of injury, and type of medical care sought. This survey enabled the calculation of annual incidence rates of accidents in daily life (per 100 people at risk of having an accident). It was determined that there were 23.4 accidents per year per 100 people, with a confidence interval of [21.6; 25.2]. Among these accidents, the annual incidence rate of accidents resulting in emergency room visits and/or hospitalization is 9.2 accidents per 100 people, with a confidence interval of [8.0; 10.4]. It was also possible to establish annual incidence rates of people injured in CVD-related accidents (rather than accidents as above): 18.9 people injured per 100 each year, with a confidence interval of [17.4; 20.4]. In absolute terms, this corresponds to 11.3 million people injured in CVD-related accidents at least once each year in metropolitan France (between 10.4 and 12.2 million), of whom nearly two in five (approximately 4.5 million people) sought hospital care for their injury.
