Accidents Among Ninth-Graders According to the 2003–2004 School Survey
The triennial school-based surveys have been conducted once a year since the 1999–2000 school year, successively in 9th grade, 5th grade, and kindergarten. The overall objective of these surveys is to gather regular information on children’s health at the national level. The 2003–2004 survey specifically examined accidents among 9th-grade students. Nine percent of them had been in an accident in the past three months: a higher proportion among boys aged 15 and older (11%) than among girls aged 14 and younger (6.8%). Of these accidents, 85% were accidents of daily life (ADL) and 15% were traffic accidents. Among ADLs, nearly three-quarters were sports-related accidents. The most serious of these occurred more frequently among boys, in cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, and among regular athletes. Excluding sports, one in three AcVC occurred at home. Among all AcVC, the most common injury was an ankle sprain, and the most common mechanism was a fall. Factors associated with AcVC included having asthma, being a boy, or regularly participating in sports. Students in ZEPs were less likely to be victims of AcVC at school. Traffic accidents involved a motorized two-wheeler eight times out of ten and were more common among boys, 9th-grade students in non-general tracks, those attending school in a small town, those who did not play sports regularly, or those who regularly went out with friends in town. All these results provide, for the first time, insights into the accident conditions of 14- to 15-year-old students in France. They may be supplemented and confirmed by the survey conducted again among 9th-grade students, under the same conditions, in 2008–2009. Knowledge of certain risk factors for accidents can already guide prevention messages. (R.A.)
