Models and Practices in Patient Education: International Perspectives. 5th Prevention Conference, Paris, April 2–3, 2009.

The session titled "Models and Practices in Patient Education: International Perspectives," held during the 2009 Prevention Days, generated contributions and points for discussion that can inform reflection on French practices. This book, which documents these discussions, highlights the complementary nature of the various approaches implemented in patient education. The first part of the book focuses on patients’ needs. The second part revolves around two fundamental concepts: the changes patients undergo due to chronic illness and the educational process, as well as the types of skills patients will need to acquire or strengthen throughout their lives with the illness. The third part focuses more on the role and practices of healthcare professionals. The fourth part presents the discussion points from the roundtable that concluded this session: issues of systematization and standardization of patient education versus its personalization and adaptation for specific audiences were addressed, as well as the role of patients in education. The richness, diversity, and originality of the approaches implemented abroad will certainly contribute to the reflection of all professionals and institutions seeking to best align educational offerings with patients’ needs and expectations.
