Emotional CPS Worksheet: Expressing Emotions Constructively (E2.1)
This fact sheet was written by Nadine Fréry and Béatrice Lamboy based on the Santé publique France CPS Reference Guide, Volume 2. It focuses on the second general emotional psychosocial competency (CPS) and provides a summary of a specific emotional psychosocial competency: Expressing Emotions Constructively (E2.1). This involves being able to appropriately name one’s own emotions. This competency is part of emotional regulation; it represents one of the effective strategies for regulating one’s emotions. Indeed, it helps increase the perception of pleasant emotions and reduce the intensity of unpleasant emotions. This emotional skill draws on social skills for effective, positive, and assertive communication. It involves developing two main skills: formulating a basic “I-message” to express both pleasant and unpleasant emotions; and formulating complex “I-messages” to express unpleasant emotions. This specific skill can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical section, practical examples are presented for adults, adolescents, and children.
