Summary of evidence-based interventions that promote healthy aging

This article presents the current state of scientific knowledge regarding validated and promising interventions that promote healthy aging among the general population aged 55 and older who are independent and living at home. It is based on the latest reviews and was conducted using a systematic methodological approach. As a result, 31 documents were selected and analyzed using dual coding (5 Cochrane reviews, 3 public health reports, and 23 review articles). They helped identify 10 types of evidence-based interventions capable of impacting the health status of older adults and/or a major determinant of aging. Among these, 6 are universal prevention interventions aimed at all older adults without specific risk factors: physical exercise programs, mind-body interventions, cognitive stimulation interventions, intergenerational interventions, interventions based on information and communication technologies (ICT), and cultural interventions. Three interventions target a population at health and/or social risk: home visits, activity and mutual aid groups, and food assistance interventions. Finally, counseling interventions have proven effective in both universal and targeted prevention settings. This review has thus identified a relatively small number of evidence-based interventions and targeted health determinants, including very few environmental determinants (social and physical). These few validated and promising interventions address multiple determinants, health conditions, and health issues simultaneously, thereby justifying a comprehensive, population-based approach in the field of prevention and health promotion for older adults.
