Promoting mental health: an individual, collective, and civic issue.
Mental health promotion is “a process aimed at strengthening the capacity of individuals and communities to take charge of their lives and improve their mental health; it involves strategies that foster supportive environments and individual resilience.” It targets all individuals and communities, particularly at-risk groups, as well as people with mental health conditions. Peer support (support groups, activities) is among the most effective initiatives. Home, school, work, and the community are the key settings for action. Inequalities related to gender, poverty, disability, unemployment, or social exclusion have a significant impact on mental health. Mental health promotion—a political act—primarily targets social determinants, which depend largely on public policy.
