Overview of quantitative health survey methods in France’s overseas departments and territories

As part of the project to extend the Health Barometers to France’s overseas departments and territories, and in conjunction with the renewal of the survey on knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors regarding HIV/AIDS in the French West Indies and French Guiana, an analysis of existing surveys was conducted to identify the specific characteristics of these territories and develop methodological proposals tailored to local constraints. This work was based on a literature review and benefited from the collaboration of a multidisciplinary group of local and metropolitan experts in the fields of prevention, surveillance, and survey methods. It enabled the collection of a dataset aimed at best characterizing the territories and their populations. From a methodological standpoint, the differences highlighted between territories suggest that each survey will need to be implemented separately. It also made it possible to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different data collection methods, leading to the selection of face-to-face and telephone interviews. Furthermore, this feasibility study for a survey in the French overseas departments and territories provides answers to several key questions. In which languages should the survey be conducted? What should be the maximum length of the questionnaire? Is it possible to conduct a remote telephone survey? Etc. All of the analyzed data is presented in a report available upon request from INPES.
