Older Adults: Taking Physiological Aging into Account.

Prescribing sleeping pills to people over 65 who complain of poor sleep is an easy solution and can have the opposite effect of what is intended: regular use of sleeping pills can worsen insomnia. We need to develop better information on sleep specific to older adults, aimed at both the general public and healthcare professionals. Seniors’ nights are shorter, and they compensate by taking short naps during the day. For example, at age 80, it is not unusual to sleep from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
