Older Adults and People with Disabilities: Denial of Abuse.
One in ten older adults or people with disabilities is believed to be a victim of abuse. The experts who worked on the Tursz report recommend several immediate measures: informing these individuals of their options for seeking help; providing support for victims; better training for professionals and caregivers; identifying the most vulnerable; improving the reporting of abuse; and creating safe spaces for victims to speak out...And to tackle the denial surrounding abuse. For Marie-Ève Joël, who led this initiative, these changes represent a “cultural revolution” that requires educational efforts at all levels. At the request of the Ministry of Health and Solidarity and under the chairmanship of Dr. Anne Tursz, a pediatrician, epidemiologist, and research director at Inserm, six preparatory committees produced a body of reflections and analyses. This work resulted in a final report by Dr. Tursz: "Do prevention and health education have a place in the fight against violence?" The chairs of each of these committees, along with Anne Tursz, chair of the entire preparatory mission, share with "La santé de l'Homme" the points they found most significant.
