Multimodal approaches in household surveys: modernized data collection, a more complex process

With the introduction of the internet as a new data collection method and the growing difficulty in contacting households, the shift toward multimodal survey protocols has become a key strategic focus for public statistical agencies. Numerous multimodal protocols are possible, allowing for the utilization of the advantages of each collection method depending on constraints, the survey’s subject matter, and the target populations. However, multimodal approaches complicate the survey process. Adjustments are necessary to ensure the quality of results: first regarding the questionnaire and its length, then regarding the definition of the data collection protocol, and finally regarding the statistical processing and aggregation of data following collection. Through the standardization and simplification efforts it requires—notably with the introduction of self-administered sections—the shift toward multimodal data collection represents a true paradigm shift for household surveys.
