“Let’s listen to pregnant women and change our practices!”

Interview with Françoise Molénat, head of the early childhood unit in the Department of Child Psychology at Montpellier University Hospital. President of the French Society of Perinatal Medicine and the Association for Training and Research on Children and Their Environment (Afrée). Author of a landmark report that served as the basis for the National Perinatal Plan, child psychiatrist Françoise Molénat explains why and how professionals must improve their ability to listen to parents—and pregnant women in particular—and must truly begin to work as a network. In particular, F. Molénat convinced public authorities to introduce an early prenatal consultation lasting forty-five minutes between the midwife and the pregnant woman around the fourth month of pregnancy. She explains the benefits of this approach and the challenges involved in implementing it.
