Leading causes of death in France in 2023 and recent trends
Introduction – This study describes cause-specific mortality in 2023, comparing trends since 2020 with the continuation of trends from 2015–2019. Methods – Using death certificates for residents who died in France between 2015 and 2023, the medical causes of death were coded according to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). The underlying causes of death were grouped according to the European list of causes of death, to which COVID-19 was added. The number of deaths and age-standardized mortality rates were analyzed by cause, age group, and sex. The 2023 rates are compared to those of 2022 and to the trend-based mortality levels estimated using a Poisson regression model between 2015 and 2019. Results – The standardized mortality rate (referred to as "mortality") is decreasing in all age groups compared to 2022, and even 2019. COVID-19 continues to decline and has become the 9th leading cause of death. A decrease in mortality compared to 2022 is observed, primarily for diseases of the circulatory system and neoplasms. Nevertheless, mortality from diseases of the circulatory system, endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases, diseases of the digestive system, genitourinary diseases, and external causes remains higher than projected based on the 2015–2019 trend. Discussion – The changes relative to past trends are consistent with international findings and help document mortality trends since the COVID-19 pandemic.
