Health promotion and training in the social sector.
Because it focuses on the social determinants of health (income, education, housing, employment, social support, etc.), health promotion potentially involves many professional sectors, particularly the social sector. This is why INPES undertook a survey of all French social work training institutions to assess the current state of educational activities related to health, health education, and health promotion for seven professions in the social sector. The study was conducted in 2014 in two phases: one quantitative, via a telephone survey based on a questionnaire (n = 318 programs analyzed); the other qualitative, through semi-structured interviews with the academic directors of the relevant programs (n = 42 interviews). Health is present in almost all programs but accounts for only 5% of the total course load. Courses primarily address health from a thematic or population-based perspective (78% and 73%, respectively, of training modules specifically dedicated to health). The concepts of “health education” and “health promotion” are largely unknown and rarely taught. The main obstacles to integrating health education into these programs are lack of time (79%) and the absence of explicit mention in training guidelines (36%). To develop this type of module, instructors are seeking support (63%). This study highlights several avenues for developing educational activities in health education and health promotion.
