Health Education: A Multidisciplinary Competency Framework.

Introduction: Training in health education (HE) is relevant to all professionals who influence public health, particularly those working in the social, health, or educational sectors in the broadest sense. The issue of competencies among HEP practitioners is central to the development of training programs in this field; however, there are no common competency frameworks for these professionals. This is why the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education, under the auspices of the National Advisory Committee for the Development of HEP Training Programs (CCNEPF), undertook this work. Methods: The study was conducted using a robust methodology that combines an analysis of professional practices through interviews with an iterative process involving successive consultation phases. These consultations were carried out with stakeholders involved in these issues (national and regional administrations, national associations, professional organizations, and organizations involved in training). Results: A total of 126 professionals from the health, social services, and education sectors were interviewed. Analysis of the interviews, the opinions of experts from the national advisory committee, and consultation with stakeholders made it possible to formalize a mission, 4 functions/situations, 66 activities, and 11 competencies shared by stakeholders in these sectors within PE. Discussion: This work provides a common foundation for conceptualizing PE training, particularly from a competency-based perspective, and for exploring new training practices. Finally, it opens up various avenues for research. [author’s abstract]
