Exposure to workplace hazards and physical strain

Exposure to various substances in the workplace can lead to physical and mental health problems. It is therefore important to understand the frequency and distribution of these exposures at the population level. The primary statistical sources available in France come from the Ministry of Labor’s SUMER survey, which regularly provides a “snapshot” of occupational exposures. More recently, the Occupational Health Department of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance has, for its part, established a program to develop “job-exposure matrices” (the Matgéné program), which provides a “lifetime” assessment of certain exposures, particularly suited to accounting for exposures whose effects manifest over the long term (such as cancers, for example).
