Epidemiological surveillance of work-related upper limb overuse disorders

Objective - The aim of this study is to provide an overview of epidemiological surveillance systems for upper limb overuse disorders, highlighting their relevance for occupational physicians. Method - To this end, we utilized published data and reports, both French and international. Results - Epidemiological surveillance is defined as the systematic monitoring and epidemiological analysis of a health issue and its determinants. Priority occupational health issues have recently been incorporated into epidemiological surveillance programs, such as upper limb overuse disorders. Indeed, France, following the example of certain countries, has recently developed this surveillance framework at the company, regional, and national levels. There are several surveillance methods that differ according to their objective and scale, and thus according to the parameters they monitor and their definition (occupational diseases and their diagnostic criteria, occupational, personal, and organizational risk factors, defined according to different assessment methods). Recently, a three-tier pilot surveillance system for overuse disorders was implemented in the Pays de la Loire region. Conclusion - The occupational physician, upon whom a large part of the surveillance system relies, contributes to obtaining general results that they can then use in their daily practice, particularly for prevention.
