Effective Interventions for Preventing Accidents in Children’s Daily Lives: A Literature Review.

Preventing everyday accidents involving children is a major public health issue. In this article, we aim to provide an overview of the scientific evidence regarding effective interventions to prevent this problem. This review was conducted using a specific method for selecting and analyzing the scientific literature and classifying the identified interventions, based on the technique of rapid reviews. This work has identified a number of promising and effective interventions for each of the main types of everyday accidents that particularly affect children: drowning, burns, falls, poisonings, electrocutions, and sports and recreational accidents. Among the identified interventions, some involve legislative measures, educational measures, and environmental measures. Some correspond to primary prevention measures, others to secondary prevention. Some are multimodal and can contribute to the prevention of several types of accidents, such as the distribution of home safety equipment or parenting support interventions most often conducted in the home by trained professionals. Overall, these results should be interpreted with caution, as the outcome indicators and levels of evidence considered in the reviews included are heterogeneous. They do not rule out the effectiveness of interventions not included in this review, as these may simply not have been subject to a rigorous published evaluation that would have allowed them to be identified in the course of our work.[author’s summary]
