Decline in the prevalence of daily smoking among adults: results from the 2018 Santé publique France Health Barometer
Introduction: Smoking is widespread in France and represents a major public health issue. Data from 2017 showed a decline in smoking prevalence among adults and minors. The purpose of this article is to present indicators of tobacco use in France in 2018 based on the Santé publique France Barometer. Methods: The data come from a random telephone survey conducted between January and July 2018 among 9,074 adults aged 18 to 75 residing in metropolitan France. Results and Conclusion: In 2018, 32.0% of 18- to 75-year-olds smoked tobacco even occasionally (35.3% of men and 28.9% of women). The prevalence of daily smoking was 25.4% (28.2% of men and 22.9% of women). The prevalence of daily smoking among adults decreased significantly between 2017 and 2018. Furthermore, the stabilization of social health inequalities regarding smoking observed in 2017 was confirmed in 2018. Nevertheless, these inequalities remain very pronounced: the most disadvantaged individuals (the unemployed, those with little or no education, and those with low incomes) are more likely to smoke than others.
