Methodology for the Entred-Dom component

People Selected for Entred-Dom

For Entred-Dom, the Health Insurance program conducted a random drawing among all individuals:

  • residing on Réunion Island, in Guadeloupe, Martinique, or French Guiana;

  • aged 18 or older;

  • insured or covered by the National Health Insurance Fund for Salaried Workers (CnamTS) or the Social Security Scheme for the Self-Employed (RSI);

  • who have received at least three reimbursements for oral antidiabetic medications and/or insulin over the past 12 months.

The random selection was based on registration codes (the last two digits of the social security number). All adults with diabetes who had a registration code were randomly selected to ensure a sufficient sample size across all overseas departments (approximately 800 people expected).

A total of 855 adults with diabetes residing in the overseas departments were included.

Conduct of the Entred-Dom Study

Data collection for the Entred-Dom study took place in two main phases:

A “medical advisor” survey conducted from October 2007 to January 2008

Starting in October 2007, medical advisors from the Health Insurance program sent a letter to the selected people with diabetes to:

  • explain the purpose of the Entred-DOM study;

  • invite them to participate in the study;

  • ask for their phone number, the times they prefer to be contacted, and their treating physician’s contact information.

After receiving the person’s consent and phone number, the medical advisor calls the person and asks them to answer a short questionnaire over the phone, which takes about 7 minutes.

A “healthcare utilization” survey

Data on reimbursements for medications, medical services (consultations, laboratory tests), medical supplies, and hospitalizations for people with diabetes are gradually extracted from the databases of the Health Insurance system and the Medical Information Systems Program (PMSI), for hospital stays, over a 3-year period.

A supplementary survey of physicians in Réunion, from June to September 2008

On the island of Réunion, a supplementary survey of physicians was conducted. This supplementary survey was subject to a specific approval from the National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL) and was funded by the Réunion Health Insurance Fund. A local medical advisor asked people with diabetes to provide their doctors’ contact information. If consent was given, an information letter and a medical questionnaire were sent to the doctors (documents identical to those used for Entred-Metropole).
