A representative national sample of people with diabetes, 2007–2010. Characteristics, health status, care, and economic burden of people with diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with a high risk of vascular disease and morbidity, as well as a reduced quality of life. Diabetes-related complications are numerous and primarily affect the heart, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. The risk of death from cardiovascular disease is two to three times higher among people with diabetes than among those without diabetes. In 2011, more than 3 million people were being treated for diabetes in France, representing 4.6% of the population. The prevalence of diabetes continues to rise: over the past ten years, the number of people treated for diabetes has increased by an average of 5.4% per year. Type 2 diabetes is the most common, accounting for 92% of treated diabetes cases, while type 1 diabetes accounts for 6% of treated diabetes cases. (R.A.)
