Quality of Life Reference Values (DHP) Among People with Diabetes Living in France - Between 2001 and 2003

Objectives—To establish French reference values for quality of life (QoL) among people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who are receiving treatment, and to compare these QoL levels by age, sex, and type of diabetes. Method - In March 2002, as part of the Entred study (National Representative Sample of People with Diabetes), 10,000 adults who had been reimbursed for at least one oral antidiabetic medication or insulin during the last quarter of 2001 received a questionnaire. Their QoL was measured using the Diabetes Health Profile across three dimensions: psychological distress, activity limitations, and loss of dietary control [scores ranging from 0 (worst) to 100 points (best QoL)]. Results - The average QoL score for people with type 1 diabetes was approximately 67 points across the three dimensions. For people with type 2 diabetes, the scores were 81 ± 19 points and 77 ± 18 points in the psychological distress and activity limitations dimensions, respectively, and 67 points in the eating disinhibition dimension. Differences based on age, sex, and type of diabetes were observed. Conclusion - This study provides French reference values for the QoL of people with diabetes receiving treatment, which are useful for diabetes healthcare networks. (R.A.)
