Care for people with type 2 diabetes in France in 2007 and trends compared to 2001.
Objectives - To describe the follow-up and treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes who received pharmacological treatment in 2007 in light of national guidelines. Methods - A cross-sectional analysis of data from a subgroup of the Entred 2007–2010 sample, comprising 3,467 adults with type 2 diabetes enrolled in the general metropolitan health insurance scheme. This study is based on an analysis of health insurance databases covering the period from August 2006 to July 2008, supplemented by two questionnaire surveys of the included patients and their physicians. The results are compared with those of the similar 2001 Entred survey. Results - In 2007, the management of type 2 diabetes was primarily carried out by general practitioners. Over the course of a year, 44% of patients had undergone three HbA1c tests, 90% at least one HbA1c test, 76% a serum lipid profile, 83% a serum creatinine test, 44% had a test for albuminuria, 50% had an ophthalmological consultation, and 38% received dental care. Significant improvements in the quality of this care were observed between 2001 and 2007. In the last quarter of the year, 19% of patients were treated with insulin. Conclusion - While the observed trends are positive, the results achieved remain insufficient in light of current public health objectives for diabetes. (R.A)
