Protecting Your Mental Health

From the outset of the pandemic, the impact on mental health has been viewed from two opposing perspectives. On the one hand, numerous studies have quantified the increase in mental health disorders. On the other hand, other scientific research has also highlighted the resilience factors at work—that is, what enabled the population to withstand stress during this period and in the aftermath. By plunging all of humanity into a situation of major stress, the coronavirus crisis forced people to cope by finding adaptive solutions. The lessons learned can be applied to any difficult situation one might face. However, resilience cannot be assumed for the entire population: the pandemic continues to hit the most vulnerable populations the hardest. Thus, in the future, health authorities could increase their vigilance toward these groups during potential lockdowns and post-lockdown periods—and beyond—in a pandemic context.
