Carbon monoxide poisoning during the period of heavy snowfall in Creuse, France, January 2007
Background. On January 24, 2007, as severe snowstorms caused numerous power outages, several cases of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning were reported to the crisis unit of the Creuse Prefecture, all linked to the use of a generator. An investigation was conducted by the Creuse Departmental Directorate of Health and Social Affairs to determine the circumstances of exposure and describe the symptoms observed in the affected individuals. Method. A medical and environmental investigation was conducted for all cases of carbon monoxide poisoning that occurred in Creuse during the period from January 22 to 28, 2007, corresponding to the entire duration of the power outage. Results. Twelve outbreaks of CO poisoning were identified over a three-day period, affecting a total of 32 people. Among the causes of poisoning, 9 outbreaks were linked to the use of a generator, 2 to the use of a kerosene heater, and 1 to the use of a gas stove. Discussion-Recommendations. These repeated cases of poisoning linked to the use of generators should draw attention to the risks associated with the use of this type of device, which are increasingly used by individuals during power outages, in all seasons.
