Heat Wave and Health Alert System. National Update as of August 10, 2018.
Key Points
The heat wave ended on Thursday, October 9. No departments were placed under an orange heat wave alert on Wednesday, August 8. Only certain departments remained under a yellow alert due to the low temperatures expected overnight from Wednesday to Thursday. All departments were downgraded to a green heat wave alert on the map for Thursday, October 9, at 4:00 p.m.
This heatwave, which began on July 24, lasted 16 days. It was the longest heatwave recorded since 2006. This factor should be taken into account, given that duration and intensity are key determinants of morbidity and mortality.
Not all regions were affected in the same way. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes was the region most severely and persistently affected.
Decrease in activity related to heat-related illnesses in emergency departments and at SOS Médecins clinics.
Stabilization in the proportion of hospitalizations for heat-related illnesses since Wednesday, August 1 (around 55% to 66% of admissions across all age groups, around 75% to 80% for those aged 75 and older).
