Trends in Knowledge, Attitudes, and Opinions Regarding Sun Protection in France: Cancer Barometer 2005, 2010, 2015

The objective of this study is to document trends in the use of sun protection measures (SPMs) aimed at preventing excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation during the summer, as well as public opinion and knowledge regarding the associated risks. The Cancer Barometer (CB), a national survey conducted every 5 years, was carried out via telephone interviews with a representative sample of 3,931 French residents aged 15 to 75 from May to October 2015. The data were weighted by age, sex, and education level for bivariate and multivariate analyses to ensure the sample’s national representativeness. The results were compared with those of the 2005 and 2010 surveys. In 2015, staying in the shade was the most frequently reported protective measure (73.5%), while wearing a hat was the least common (44.9%). The protective measures “staying in the shade” and “applying sunscreen every two hours” have increased since 2005. Wearing sunglasses remained stable, while wearing a hat and protective clothing decreased. More than 9 in 10 people report that sun exposure poses a cancer risk (95.9% vs. 96.2%, NS). Nevertheless, nearly one in two people (46.8%) believe that sunburn has no consequences in adulthood (37.6% in 2005, p=0.001) and 20.9% believe it prepares the skin for the sun (28.0% in 2005, p=0.001). Knowledge, as measured by self-report, was likely overreported due to social desirability bias. Weighting the data should have limited the impact of this overestimation. Current prevention efforts do not appear to be effectively curbing the incidence of UV-related diseases, one of the most severe forms of which, cutaneous melanoma, is on the rise. The observed results suggest weaknesses in UV prevention and call for a review of sun protection measures in France, particularly through environmental interventions. Conclusion: Although satisfaction rates by country are relatively satisfactory, the results suggest there is ample room for improvement, as policymakers have access to these data via a digital platform.
