Pleural Mesothelioma: High-Risk Occupations and Industries Among Men. Based on data from the National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program (PNSM)
At least 80% of mesothelioma cases in industrialized countries are caused by occupational exposure to asbestos. Since the first cases were observed in the asbestos mining and processing sector, the list of high-risk occupations has grown considerably over time. In this context, it seemed important for public health to better identify which occupations and sectors of activity are most at risk for mesothelioma in France, in order to strengthen prevention efforts among workers who have been or are still exposed to asbestos. The results presented are from the National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program (PNSM) coordinated by the Department of Occupational Health (DST) of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS), a program that aims to continuously document trends in the mesothelioma epidemic in France.
