Estimation of occupational exposure to asbestos in France among retired male self-employed craftsmen covered by the Social Security Scheme for the Self-Employed (RSI), based on data from the ESPrI program.

The ESPrI program (Epidemiology and Surveillance of Self-Employed Workers), launched in 2005 in collaboration with the Social Security System for the Self-Employed in seven regions of metropolitan France, consists of two components: post-occupational follow-up and epidemiological surveillance. The first component aims to identify, among newly retired artisans, any past occupational exposure to asbestos. This article presents the profile of the respondents, their careers, and, based on the observed data, the prevalence of lifetime exposure, cumulative exposure durations, and maximum exposure levels reached throughout their careers, estimated for all retired craftsmen concerned and by sector of activity. The prevalence of exposure during their careers among the entire population of retired male craftsmen was estimated at 64% (95% CI: [63–66]).
