Profiles of Alcohol Consumers in Metropolitan France in 2021 and Changes in Social Disparities. An Overview. National Edition. March 2026
In 2021, the proportion of adults whose alcohol consumption posed significant health risks was high: ranging from 22% over the past 7 days based on low-risk drinking guidelines to 37% over the past 12 months according to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C). Regardless of the indicator examined, men were more affected than women. In 2021, individuals in the most advantaged positions in terms of income and perceived financial situation, educational attainment, or socio-professional category reported weekly drinking more frequently than those who were socially disadvantaged, and were more likely to exceed the guidelines. ; Conversely, the least advantaged individuals consumed alcohol more intensively overall (daily consumption, significant binge drinking at least once a month) and were more often at risk of chronic alcohol use or dependence based on their reported consumption over the past 12 months.; These findings have been evident for several years and tend to persist. We observe downward trends or stability in the various consumption indicators across different social groups, with relatively parallel trends across all indicators. ; Certain groups of consumers exhibit a combination of high consumption levels, a low desire to reduce consumption, limited knowledge of alcohol-related cancer risks, and unfavorable social characteristics and health behaviors.
