A study was conducted on the associations between family status and levels of alcohol and tobacco consumption among the French population. The study covers the period from 1980 to 2002, based on decennial data from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). Family living arrangements—single, cohabiting, married, etc.—are changing and have an impact on evolving health behaviors. The patterns are converging among men and women; thus, over the past thirty years, young singles—both women and men—have gradually engaged in riskier alcohol consumption than their married counterparts.
