Alcohol, one of the leading causes of hospitalization in France

The consequences of excessive alcohol consumption remain a major public health problem in France. Their human and economic costs are considerable. They result in numerous hospitalizations to treat alcohol abuse itself and, above all, its consequences. This article presents the results of a study covering all hospital stays—both public and private—related to alcohol consumption recorded in 2012, including stays in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, and dentistry (MCO), psychiatry, and follow-up care and rehabilitation (SSR). These results confirm that the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption are one of the leading causes of hospitalization in France. In 2012, more than 580,000 stays were alcohol-related in MCO, accounting for 2.2% of all stays and visits; in psychiatry, more than 2,700,000 patient-days were attributed to alcohol, representing 10.4% of total patient-days and 3.7% of outpatient psychiatric procedures in facilities receiving annual funding; finally, in rehabilitation, more than 2,000,000 patient-days related to excessive alcohol consumption were recorded, representing 5.6% of total activity. The estimated cost amounts to nearly 3.6% of total hospital expenditures in 2012. The number of hospital stays for acute alcohol intoxication and complications underscores the importance of addressing alcohol-related issues as early as possible and during every hospital stay, with the aim of ultimately limiting these complications and the rehospitalizations they cause. This requires improving the training of teams in emergency departments and non-specialized addiction treatment units, and strengthening the resources allocated to liaison teams so that they are tailored to the needs of healthcare facilities.
