Addiction treatments: What role do they play in controlling the tobacco epidemic?
Some treatments for tobacco dependence have scientifically proven efficacy, but this efficacy may seem limited. The most effective treatments enable at least 6 months of complete abstinence in, at best, 35% of smokers. Their effectiveness—understood here as their impact on smoking prevalence—can therefore be called into question. In fact, such a strategy is essential if we are to curb the tobacco pandemic in the first half of this century. This is why it is included in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) as a specific article, Article 14, whose provisions were adopted in November 2010. (R.A.)
