OSCOUR National Newsletter, July 16, 2019
Summary
In Week 28 (July 8–14, 2019), total activity and hospitalizations following emergency department visits decreased among children (-10.4%, or -9,318 visits, and -6%, or -485 hospitalizations) and remained stable among adults.
Over the past week, most seasonal and non-specific indicators have declined. However, among adults, there was an increase in visits for conjunctivitis (+24%, or +181 visits) and viral meningitis (+29%, or +14 visits). Furthermore, despite the decrease in visits for dehydration and isolated fever among children (down 13% and 10%, respectively), the share of activity for these two indicators in total coded activity remains slightly higher than that observed in the previous two years. Measles is on the rise again among both children (+35%, or +11 visits) and adults (+26%, or +5 visits).
Among the most common conditions, the only increases in visits were for stroke (9.4%, or +109 visits) and chest pain (+9%, or +85 visits) in people aged 75 or older
