Salmonella enteric infections in Guipúzcoa, Spain, from 1983 to 2000

The incidence of Salmonella enteric infections in Guipúzcoa, Spain, was assessed through a cohort study conducted from 1983 to 2000. Only cases confirmed by stool culture were included. The average annual incidence among children under two years of age was 1,121 per 100,000 (95% CI: 1,060–1,181). This age group had the highest relative risk (RR), 16.2 times higher than that of those over 14 years of age. Salmonella Enteridis was the predominant serotype (80.4% of cases), followed by Salmonella Typhimurium (11.7%). (R.A.)
