Antibiotic resistance: tools for effective translational research
The crisis resulting from the rise in bacterial resistance threatens human, animal, and environmental health. The health and economic impact of the crisis is massive. While the alarm has been widely sounded and mechanisms and programs to support innovation in the fight against antibiotic resistance have been put in place, it is clear that the new antibiotic products being proposed are failing to achieve the economic viability needed to reach the market and serve patients and the community. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop tools and indicators to identify effective interventions in the fight against antibiotic resistance. The discussions outlined in this article focus on these two aspects of translational research: - the prevention and health impact of the antibiotic resistance problem, and - the specificities of clinical research to drive innovation in the fight against antibiotic resistance. This article, based on the reflections of a group of French experts, proposes directly actionable solutions that could be implemented quickly and radically transform the quality and quantity of our resources for combating this issue.
