Epidemiological surveillance in Corsica. Update as of March 24, 2022.

Key Points

COVID-19

The data show a clear increase in indicators of viral circulation (sharp increases in incidence and positivity rates), but without an impact on hospital activity in Week 11.

Regional incidence and positivity rates are rising sharply (1,234 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 11 vs. 648 the previous week, a 90% increase, and 28.2%, an 8.7 percentage point increase). The testing rate is increasing to a lesser extent (4,372 per 100,000 inhabitants, a 31% increase).

Across the region, the number of patients currently hospitalized in general wards is stable (70 hospitalizations as of March 20 vs. 71 on March 13). The number in intensive care is stable or even slightly decreasing (6 hospitalizations on March 20 vs. 8 on March 13).

Influenza and influenza-like illness

  • First week of the epidemic.

  • Emergency departments: 39 visits related to flu-like illness were recorded in emergency departments in Week 11, representing 2.2% of total emergency department visits, a sharp increase compared to the previous week (0.9%). Four hospitalizations were recorded in Week 11, compared to 2 the previous week.

  • SOS Médecins - 229 consultations for influenza-like illness were conducted by SOS Médecins in Week 11, representing 14.1% of total activity, an increase compared to the previous week (11.8%).

  • Sentinelles Network - In Week 11, the incidence rate for influenza-like illnesses, not yet finalized, is 456 per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [216; 696]). In Week 10, this rate was 74 per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [14; 134]).

  • Surveillance of influenza/COVID-19 cases admitted to intensive care - Since January 2020, 152 severe cases of influenza/COVID-19 in intensive care have been reported, including 1 case of influenza, hospitalized at Bastia General Hospital in S02. No new cases have been reported since last week’s update.

Gastroenteritis

  • Low activity.

  • Emergency departments - Emergency department activity related to gastroenteritis in Week 11 is slightly down compared to the previous week. It accounts for 2.3% of emergency department activity (vs. 2.7% the previous week).

  • SOS Médecins - Activity at the SOS Médecins association related to gastroenteritis in Week 11 is slightly lower than the previous week. It accounts for 2.6% of the association’s total activity (vs. 2.9% the previous week).

  • Réseau Sentinelles - In Week 11, the incidence rate was 36 per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [0; 76]). In Week 10, the incidence rate was 69 per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [23; 115]).
