Influenza Surveillance in Upper and Lower Normandy. Update as of March 15, 2012. 

Situation in the Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy regions

Since week 2011-44, 9 severe cases of influenza have been reported to Cire Normandie (7 in Upper Normandy and 2 in Lower Normandy). Among these cases, there were 8 adult cases and 1 pediatric case. Three of the adult cases have died. Virological analyses identified 1 case of influenza A(H1N1)2009 and 5 cases of influenza A(H3N2). Subtyping of the strain responsible for the other three cases is currently underway.

The increase in the influenza incidence rate continued in week 2012-10, rising from 277 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 2012-09 to 328 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 2012-10.

In week 2012-10, 20% of samples tested positive for influenza A (10 out of 107 samples analyzed).

Activity of emergency departments in Lower and Upper Normandy participating in the Oscour® network and the SOS Médecins associations in Caen, Cherbourg, and Rouen

In week 2012-10, the proportion of diagnoses coded as "influenza" accounted for 0.94% of emergency department activity, compared to 0.87% in week 2012-09. Regarding SOS Médecins activity, the number and proportion of influenza diagnoses continued to rise (Figure 4). In week 2012-10, cases handled in connection with influenza accounted for 10.8% of SOS Médecins activity, compared to 9.1% in week 2012-09.

Clustered cases of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in nursing homes

In total, 14 clusters of ARI in nursing homes have been reported to the Cire Normandie since February 12, 2012 (5 in Upper Normandy and 9 in Lower Normandy).

Although the national peak of the flu epidemic has passed at the national level, a general review of indicators in the Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie regions shows that the increase in flu activity that began in week 2012-05 continued in both regions during week 2012-10.
