Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of April 24, 2025.

Key Points

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • After several weeks of fluctuations, the seasonal flu epidemic has been on the decline over the past two weeks, both along the coast and in local health centers and hospitals.

Dengue

  • Over the past two weeks (Weeks 15 and 16), overall dengue activity in the region was relatively low and stable, corresponding to levels observed during the inter-epidemic period: an average of 16 confirmed or probable cases per week. The majority of cases are reported in the Savanes sector, but the Cayenne Island and West Coast sectors are also reporting cases. The serotype identified over the past two weeks (W15 and W16) was overwhelmingly DENV-2.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remained low, though slightly higher, with 7 cases of P. vivax (5 and 2 in S15 and S16, respectively, vs. 2 in total in S13 and S14), including one relapse.

  • In total, 53 malaria cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity declined between January and March (from 27 monthly cases to 4); it has risen slightly in April, with 8 cases recorded over the past three weeks.

Diarrhea

  • Activity was on the rise in remote communities (CDPS and local hospitals) and along the coast over the past two weeks (data from the Cayenne and Western Guyana hospitals).

  • Activity remained stable in private practice.
