Epidemiological Situation of Malaria in French Guiana. Update as of July 6, 2021.
Summary
The epidemiological situation regarding malaria remained stable during the first half of 2021. The municipality of Régina remains an area of active transmission, particularly the town center and its outskirts.
The health crisis caused by the coronavirus does not appear to have disrupted the malaria surveillance system (a condition that leads to medical consultation, automated and comprehensive data collection), but increased border controls at river crossings may have affected the arrival of people working in the forest. The number of people exposed in high-transmission areas (forests, gold panning sites) may have decreased, which may have contributed to the decline in the number of new infections starting in 2020.
Key Indicators - First Half of 2021
48 malaria cases diagnosed by LBM and CDPS, including 6 hospitalized cases (1 severe case, 0 deaths)
81% P. vivax, 15% P. falciparum, and 4% P. malariae
82% of malaria cases have a presumed place of infection, of which 75% are in French Guiana, 11% in Africa, and 5% each in Brazil, Suriname, and Guyana.
