COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of November 18, 2021

Summary

The decline in the fourth wave of COVID-19 continued sharply last week: the incidence rate stood at 101 per 100,000 inhabitants (unadjusted) and 116 per 100,000 inhabitants (adjusted), with this decrease observed across the entire country.

The effective R stood at 0.70, down from the previous week.

The adjusted testing rate was slightly down in S45 (-7%). The regional positivity rate reached the 5% alert threshold for the first time since March 2021.

The decline in incidence was 17% in Cayenne, 10% in Savanes, and 56% on the Western Coast (incidence rate of 31 per 100,000 inhabitants). The trend was also downward in Maroni and stable in Oyapock.

Hospitalizations across all departments were down by nearly 38%, with 22 hospitalizations in Week 45. Meanwhile, ICU admissions remained stable, with 5 ICU admissions last week, the same as in Week 44. With 5 new deaths, the total number of deaths recorded during the fourth wave reached 126.

Vaccination coverage continues to increase, reaching 34.7% for a full course and 39.8% for one dose (ages 12 and older). Booster shots (third dose) are also beginning, helping to maintain strong protection against severe cases among the elderly and vulnerable.
