COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of May 13, 2021
Key Points
The regional trend is sharply rising, with a weekly incidence rate of 320 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. After 10 days of stabilization at an incidence of approximately 250 per 100,000, the number of cases has been rising again across the territory since May 3, with an increase of more than 30% in one week. This resurgence is evident on the island of Cayenne, but the increase is even more pronounced in Savanes and the West, where the outbreak continues to spread. The incidence rate among those under 20 is now on par with that of other age groups two weeks after the start of the school year.
As of May 11, the effective reproduction number (R_eff) for confirmed cases was estimated at 1.18, up 20%, reflecting this trend.
Hospitalizations and ICU admissions remain stable at a high level, staying close to the peak of the second wave.
Three new deaths were also reported last week, bringing the total number of deaths since March 2020 to 106.
Only 4.3% of the population in French Guiana is vaccinated: this coverage rate is too low to protect the territory, but it is increasing among those aged 50 and older, with nearly a quarter having received a first vaccine dose.
