COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of April 22, 2021
Key Points
The regional incidence rate continues to rise and stood at 192 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, representing a 33% increase compared to the previous week. As of April 20, the effective reproduction number (R_eff) for confirmed cases was estimated at 1.35 [1.24–1.46], down from last week, indicating a slight slowdown. However, it remains significantly above 1, indicating that infections are still on the rise. More than 80% of cases involve the V3 (BR) variant.
The increase is occurring in the sectors initially affected—Ile de Cayenne and Savanes—as well as in the west, and an increase is beginning in the Oyapock and Maroni sectors.
The third wave has thus begun across the entire territory, while only 2.5% of the population is fully vaccinated with two doses.
Hospitalizations across all departments remained stable last week, while ICU admissions increased.
Two new hospital deaths were recorded in S15.
In this context, it is important to maintain a high level of vigilance by adhering to preventive measures and social distancing guidelines in all settings—both private and professional—to limit transmission and protect oneself and others. Since March 30, vaccination has been available to everyone over the age of 30 in French Guiana.
