Psychosocial stressors in the workplace and suicide risk: The Samotrace Program, workplace component, Rhône and Isère departments, 2007–2009
The Samotrace program, "Rhône-Alpes and Centre Regional Observatory on Mental Health in the Workplace," was established in 2003 with the aim of estimating the prevalence of mental health disorders and their associated occupational exposures by occupation (profession and industry sector), as well as generating data to better identify occupational exposures that pose a risk to mental health. This study analyzed data from the workplace epidemiological component collected between 2007 and 2009 in the Rhône and Isère departments. A sample of employees was randomly selected during routine occupational health visits; 4,109 individuals completed questionnaires suitable for use in this analysis. The study suggests that the psychosocial occupational exposures of employees in the sample differ depending on the factor considered and vary by gender, age, socio-professional category, and sector of activity. The study shows that suicide risk (assessed using the MINI diagnostic questionnaire) appears to be associated with certain occupational exposures, particularly exposure to bullying, threats, humiliation, or unwanted sexual advances among men in the sample (OR=2.55, 95% CI [1.43–4.55]). The results of this study add to the body of knowledge on psychosocial occupational exposures and their associations with suicide risk and underscore the importance of targeting prevention efforts toward the occupational groups most at risk. Furthermore, since suicidal behavior is multifactorial, multidisciplinary prevention strategies addressing both occupational and non-occupational factors appear necessary, reinforcing the importance of integrating occupational health and public health.
