Urban Planning for Better Health: Introduction to the Report
This thematic report highlights the progress made and the areas where further progress is needed to integrate public health issues into land-use and urban planning initiatives. On the one hand, the context has changed: climate change is not new, but we have increasing scientific evidence of its impact on people’s physical and mental health and quality of life; and its consequences are now more tangible, more visible, and have become part of people’s daily lives: more frequent and large-scale wildfires, floods, heat waves, droughts, etc. On the other hand, this same climate change is one of the factors contributing to the emergence of pandemics such as COVID-19, diseases affecting animals and plants, etc.
