Religion in the experience of HIV/AIDS.
The ANRS surveyed thirty-eight people living with HIV/AIDS who follow a religious or spiritual path. The survey explored the meaning of the illness, social integration, and relationships with the medical system. The results are highly nuanced. Religion plays an important role. For example, belonging to a religious group can break the cycle of loneliness and facilitate social integration. Religion can also generate a sense of exclusion linked to guilt, as explained by socio-anthropologist Anne-Cécile Bégot.
