Renacoq: Surveillance of Pertussis in Hospitals in 2008
Since 1996, the Renacoq network has tracked pertussis cases identified in pediatric hospital settings and monitored the impact of vaccination strategies. In 42 hospitals, bacteriologists record the results of tests for the bacterium in children under 16 years of age. Pediatricians complete a form for cases involving infants under 6 months of age. In 2008, 39 hospitals participated. Bacteriologists identified 138 laboratory-confirmed cases, reflecting the low incidence generally observed between two epidemic peaks. Among the 56 cases documented by a pediatric form, the male-to-female ratio was 1.1, and 54% of cases were under 3 months of age. All cases, except for one clinical case, were biologically confirmed. All children were hospitalized, with 21% admitted to intensive care—a particularly high proportion. No deaths were reported. Vaccination status, determined from the health records of 88% of cases, shows that 73% were unvaccinated. A source of infection was identified in 54% of the children, primarily one of the two parents. The epidemiological characteristics of the cases in 2008 are very similar to those of recent years, with a majority of biologically confirmed cases and an overall decrease in the number of cases among children under 6 months of age. Particular attention must be paid to the participation of network members. (R.A.)
